Video cameras are eveywhere. Since the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the London subway bombings on July 7, 2005, governments and other organizations have been increasing their surveillance efforts with newer technology and better equipment. These technologies also are playing a role in crime deterrence and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Video surveillance systems have languished in the analog world for decades. New technology, though, is yielding some amazing new systems. Like most other video these days, the trend is toward Internet protocol (IP), digital, wireless, often humanless monitoring with intelligent software and all the benefits these improvements offer. Today’s systems incorporate a number of new functions:

• Monochrome to color: While the move away from black and white isn’t really a new trend, it is still going on. In fact, most monitoring today is in color.

China’s Growing Video Surveillance Market – How will it benefit Overseas Surveillance Brands?

Source: DNFSecurity – China, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, might also be one of the biggest consumers in the surveillance global market. In a study conducted by IMS Research last month, it is expected that the Chinese surveillance market between 2010 to 2014 will grow over 20% annually, boosting the national surveillance market to $3.5 billion by 2014. This is a substantial amount, considering that the estimated Chinese surveillance market in 2009 was $1.4 billion.

However what does this mean to the global surveillance market? As we all know entering the Chinese market, in general, can be tricky especially for businesses coming from the West. The culture, the fierce competition, and everything else in between can determine the success or failure of a business. However one of the biggest adversities that foreign companies endure, especially in the surveillance and technology industry, are the strict Chinese trade rules and regulations.

In fact companies in the foreign business community find that these strict trade regulations often hinder them from doing business in China, ultimately giving domestic brands the upper hand in the end. So is it worth surveillance-based companies in the US or Europe to enter into the “Wild East”? The verdict is still up in the air, but one thing is for sure, China is a hot emerging surveillance market.

The Benefits of Using Standard Technologies in Video Surveillance

Unless you speak Modern Greek, chances are small that you will understand it. In order to explain to you what standards are and why they are so important, let’s analyze this problem.

You could say that the reason that you don’t understand the sentence is that you don’t speak Greek. Just as well, the reason could be that the writer, don’t speak a language that you understand. Clearly there is a communication problem, preventing the message from getting across.

How can we solve this problem? You could learn Greek, but that is cumbersome and probably a bit of overkill in order to read the introduction of this article. I could learn your mother tongue, but I would have to translate this document many times if I want to make sure that everybody understands. Or we could use a common language like English, which is what we are doing now.

Clearly, the latter is the most interesting idea. With this small example, we immediately get to the core of the use and benefit of standards: using a common language reduces the overall effort and cost and allows entities to communicate with each other.

An open standard is a standard that is publicly available, meaning that anyone is allowed to use it. This doesn’t necessarily imply that it is free: technology patents for which a fee has to be paid can still apply. Open standards are not usually controlled by a single group or vendor and don’t rely on specific technologies.

There are thousands of standards available today, each with a different purpose. For networking, such standards as TCP/IP, HTTP, HTML, SMTP, XML, etc will no doubt sound familiar. For images, standards like JPEG are widely used, and everyone knows the MP3 standard for encoding sound.

The installation at this site is a challenge to every aspect of a security system, including centralised management, bandwidth allocation, and network control. It is a classic site, as are many of the new installations today, in that a CCTV system operates on a hybrid platform, and coexists with existing analogue cameras and other applications within the same network.

The Geovision hybrid DVR system with its multiple compression and streaming capabilities addresses all these challenges in a simple package. The system hosts 128 newly purchased cameras in addition to its existing analogue cameras, with megapixel cameras at critical points. All video streaming travels through a 10/100MBPS network and coexists with other applications within the same network. Owing to the size and complexity of an LTP network, each module of the CCTV system must be able to function on its own even if disconnected from the network. As the budget comes in two phases, the system must be modular and scalable for future camera expansion, to incorporate possibly an additional 300-cameras.

Milestone Systems open platform IP video management software is being used by Fraport AG to improve both security and operational excellence at Varna and Burgas Airports in Bulgaria.RAD Group has installed Milestone XProtectaEURAc Enterprise software, operating several hundred Axis network cameras in both airports, with IBMservers and Cisco network infrastructure.

At the end of 2006 the German-Bulgarian consortium of the airport operator Fraport AG and the Bulgarian logistics company BM Star won a bid for the operation of both Varna and Burgas Airports – gateways to the popular Bulgarian Black Sea tourist region that includes Sunny Beach. Called the ‘Summer Capital’ of Bulgaria, Varna and Burgas Airports are at the heart of the area, which includes developed business communities, close to both resorts and transport facilities. Over a 35-year concession period, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management will be operating and investing in the development of both coastal airports.

Prior to 2008, Varna and Burgas Airports had individual systems for different tasks, and analog surveillance cameras.The analog technology had limitations in quality like the inability to monitor remotely between the two airports, to expand the systems, or to integrate with other security solutions.Management could see that IP technology was the way of the future and they did not want to be single-vendor dependent, in order to get best price performance.

Basler’s surveillance solutions see record growth in sales

Basler Vision Technologies has set an optimum course for future growth during the first half of 2010. In the second quarter of 2010, the camera business segment realised sales of €10.7 million. The revenue from industrial digital cameras and video surveillance cameras increased by 91% (previous year: €5.6 million), marking a new record level. With earnings before interest and taxes in the second quarter of €3.2 million (previous year: €0.4 million, €+2.8 million), this business segment demonstrated its high profitability. At €13.3 million, incoming orders increased by 117 % for the reporting period compared to the previous year’s value of €6.1 million. This means that incoming orders reached a new record level, just as they did in the preceding quarter.

IQinVision adapts the iPhone App Model

IQinVision has begun building a selection of downloadable applications for its line of digital cameras, modeling the approach Apple is using with its popular iPhone.

Users of IQinVision cameras can currently choose from a menu of 15 applications that boost the value of their devices, said Paul Bodell, chief marketing officer for IQinVision. The group includes two from third-parties. Agent Vi is providing downloadable analytics. Viasys also is providing analytics along with a tool for filtering unwanted video at the camera. Most of the apps are designed to interact with image data gathered by the camera before it is altered through processing or compression, thereby affording users that much more of a direct return on the premium they pay for a greatly enhanced image.

The program also offers a way for users to add immediate value to their HD and megapixel cameras, said Bodell, Analytics and perimeter alarms may useful on a camera mounted near the side entrance of a building, and access control apps might fit well on a camera near the main entrance.

Some of the apps can run independent of the video management system, which can make loading and use easier in certain circumstances. During a phone interview, Bodell demonstrated IQaccess Access Control/Remote Attendant. The tool downloads via Internet connection to any PC. In the demonstration, the software linked to a camera that was mounted above the unmanned reception desk in IQinVision office. When a visitor enters, the software triggers an immediate notification on employee PCs, and opens a pop-up window to show the camera image. The visitor can then be greeted appropriately.
